A Coralville man was arrested early Friday after a traffic stop indicated he was under the influence.

The incident occurred in downtown Iowa City just before 3 am at the corner of Clinton and Washington streets.  26-year-old Devontae King of 2nd Street  was stopped for failure to obey a traffic signal and stopping in a crosswalk. Upon contact, King reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, an odor of ingested alcohol, and had bar stamps on his hands. He allegedly admitted to drinking before driving.

When asked to identify himself, King gave a last name and birthdate different than his own. He eventually provided his social security number, which  police used to get his true identity.

King failed sobriety testing and a Datamaster showed his blood alcohol level at .157 percent.

A check of King’s records showed a warrant stemming from failing to appear at arraignment on Monday to face charges of Child Endangerment and 4th degree Criminal Mischief.

King was charged Friday with first offense OWI and Providing False ID information. He could be sentenced to a maximum 13 months in jail if convicted.
