A Cedar Rapids man was arrested Thursday morning after a failed theft attempt at a Coralville business.

According to police, 37-year-old Nathan Goad of C Avenue Northeast entered Theissen’s on Westcor Drive just before 9:30 am. He reportedly had no merchandise with him when he came in, and selected an air compressor valued at nearly $870.  Goad then reportedly used false paperwork to attempt to return the air compressor for cash.

The return was denied, and he fled the store. An employee reportedly tried to stop Goad and opened the passenger door to his truck. Goad backed out of his parking space, with the passenger door allegedly knocking over the employee. The employee was injured and had to be transported to a hospital for treatment.

Arrest reports indicate that the truck Goad was operating had no plates and the truck was not registered to him. A check of his driving status showed him as barred.

Goad was arrested and charged with 3rd degree Theft, Leaving the scene of an Injury Accident, and Driving While Barred. If convicted on the counts, he could be sentenced to up to five years in prison.
