An Iowa City traffic stop has led to the arrest of a convicted felon on drug and weapons charges.

Iowa City Police pulled over a 2005 Buick LeSabre on westbound Highway 1 near Hudson Avenue just before 4:30 Saturday afternoon for an inoperable taillight. The officer reports a strong smell of marijuana emanating from the vehicle.

A probable cause search turned up 40 grams of marijuana, multiple small plastic baggies and a scale with trace amounts of marijuana all inside a backpack. A SCCY CPX-2 9mm pistol was found in the glove box. The serial number had been scratched off.

A passenger in the car, 26-year-old Roosevelt Lee, allegedly admitted that the gun, the backpack and its contents were all his. He was arrested and charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Felon, a Controlled Substance Violation, and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over ten years in prison.

Lee, who lists his address as CommUnity Crisis Services on Gilbert Court, has a previous felony conviction for 2nd Degree Theft in 2018. That same year he was fined $940 for assaulting a cab driver who had just dropped him off at his then-Clearwater Court residence.
