A recent surge in COVID-19 cases in the Solon Community School District has leaders adding safety measures to stop the spread.
KCRG TV reports that the latest weekly figures released Monday showed 67 new cases. Superintendent Davis Eidahl said before that, they haven’t seen more than 9 positive cases in a single week since school started in late August.
District nurses are now requiring quarantining within a household. If one child tests positive in the household, other children in the household must stay home for up to 7 days until they get a negative test or a doctor’s note.
The station says some district parents blame the lack of a mask requirement. One pointed out that they have more active cases than the Iowa City Community School District, a system nine times the size of Solon’s. Iowa City schools have a mask mandate in place.
