An Iowa City man arrested for a weapons offense faces additional charges after police say he tried to sneak marijuana into the Johnson County Jail by hiding it around his genitals.

Iowa City Police were called to the Maggard Street apartment of 19-year-old Amarie Polk just after 9:30 Saturday night for a domestic disturbance. Polk left the scene on foot before police could arrive, but they eventually found him two blocks away just before 9:45pm. He allegedly claimed to be someone else, leading officers to continue their search.

Police later found Polk’s driver’s license photo and realized they had already made contact with him. They were able to relocate Polk near the corner of Summit and Walnut Streets and place him under arrest.

Investigators say they found a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson pistol and a baggie of marijuana in Polk’s fanny pack. The serial number on the gun had been obliterated, and police say Polk was too young to own a pistol.

Polk was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 11pm. He was asked if he had additional drugs or contraband on his person, which he allegedly vehemently denied. Police say a search of his person turned up more marijuana around his genitalia.

Polk now faces charges of Persons Ineligible to Carry a Firearm, Possession of Contraband in  a Correctional Facility, Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Providing False Identity Information. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over seven years in prison.
