University of Iowa Police are reporting an uptick in stolen bicycles on campus.

In a Wednesday news release, the UI Department of Public Safety says since the beginning of the fall 2021 semester, calls for service indicate an increase in bicycle theft on campus and near the UI Hospitals and Clinics.

UI Police say they and security staff have increased patrols in the affected areas. They remind those who bicycle to campus to:

  • Strongly consider investing in a small tracking device for your bicycle.
  • Lock both the bike frame and bike tire to the bike rack.
  • Use bike racks in visible, high-traffic areas.
  • Avoid leaving your bike unattended in the same rack for multiple days without checking on it.
  • Register your bikeonline with the university for free.
  • Take a photo of your bike and record the serial number.

If you notice suspicious activity near a bike rack on campus, the UI Department of Public Safety urges you to call them at 319-335-5022.
