The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office is considering establishing a satellite office in Solon.
The proposal was discussed at a joint meeting of the Solon City Council and the Johnson County Board of Supervisors on Thursday. If approved, the substation would be located in the old Solon City Hall building on South Iowa Street.
Proponents say a sheriff’s office substation in the growing community would give deputies a place to fill out paperwork, hold interviews, and conduct other business without having to drive back to the main sheriff’s office in Iowa City. It would also free up room at the cramped South Capitol Street facility.
According to The Cedar Rapids Gazette, Solon has grown by 48% over the last ten years, from 2,037 residents in 2010 to 3,018, according to the 2020 census.
The Gazette also reports that Tiffin, which is the fastest-growing city in Iowa, is considering asking for a sheriff’s office substation of its own.
