An Iowa City man falsely accused of stealing a firearm has still been charged after police learned he possessed it illegally.
29-year-old Victor Curry of Westwinds Drive was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 2:15 Saturday morning. According to arrest records, 28-year-old Isaiah Aaron contacted the ICPD on May 13th to report that Curry had stolen a Diamondback rifle from his Michael Street residence and refused to return it. Aaron also accused Curry of trafficking in stolen weapons.
An investigation determined that Aaron had allowed Curry to use the gun and later accepted money for it. Police say they also found messages where Aaron admitted the gun was not actually stolen.
Earlier this week, Aaron was charged with Making a False Report to Law Enforcement. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
Police say Curry is now charged with Dominion or Control of a Firearm as a Domestic Abuser. Court records show Curry was convicted of a felony domestic abuse charge in 2016. He was also arrested in July near Old Highway 218 and McCollister Boulevard for allegedly driving while intoxicated with a loaded handgun in his vehicle.
