A University of Iowa football player from Grimes faces OWI charges after being stopped for having too many riders on his moped.

Police stopped 19-year-old Zachary Brand after he was observed near the intersection of Burlington Street and Riverside Drive Sunday at 1:35 am, operating his Wolf moped with too many riders and no safety flag.  He reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, impaired speech, impaired balance, and had the odor of ingested alcohol. Brand denied drinking, but he showed measurable impairment on field sobriety tests and gave a Datamaster reading of .108 percent.

During a search incident to arrest, Brand was allegedly found with a fictitious Michigan driver’s license in his pocket, showing him to be of legal drinking age.

Brand has been charged with first offense OWI and possession of a fictitious license, both serious misdemeanors.

Brand is listed as a freshman running back on the UI football roster, but hasn’t seen action so far this year.
