A man has been arrested after he allegedly assaulted a woman and was shot by the woman’s relative.

Cedar Rapids Police were called to a residence on 12th Street Northeast Sunday at 5:15 am on reports of an assault. Upon arrival, a 21-year-old woman was found with non-life-threatening injuries. The man who allegedly assaulted her, 34-year-old David Walker, had left the residence prior to officer’s arrival.

About the same time as police were at the residence, Walker came into UnityPoint-St. Luke’s Hospital with a gunshot wound to the leg.  After investigating the incident and interviewing witnesses to the reported assault, it was determined that an 18-year-old relative of the assault victim shot at Walker during the incident.

Walker was treated at the hospital, then charged with Assault Causing Bodily Injury. He was taken to the Linn County Correctional Center.

Police are working with the Linn County Attorney’s Office to determine if additional charges will be filed related to the incident. The incident continues to be investigated.
