A Burlington man faces several charges after fleeing police after a traffic stop.

25-year-old Vonell Williams II of South 10th Street was stopped at 3:40 am Sunday after stopping ahead of the stop line and making an illegal turn on West Burlington Street. He gave the name of another Burlington resident when asked to identify himself, but a driver’s license photo inquiry showed that he was giving an incorrect name.

Williams allegedly fled the scene and was caught after a brief foot chase. He reportedly admitted to lying to police about his identity because he had a warrant for his arrest.

A probable cause search of the vehicle turned up a backpack containing a mason jar of marijuana.

A check of the man’s driving record showed that his privileges were suspended for non-payment of fines since 2016; court records indicate he pleaded guilty to dominion or control of a firearm by a felon and a controlled substance violation from an incident on December 30th of last year. A sentencing hearing was scheduled for September 7th until it was discovered he committed a parole violation by being involved in the December incident, and a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Williams was taken into custody. He faces charges of Interference with Official Acts, Driving while Suspended, 3rd or subsequent Possession of a Controlled Substance, and Providing False ID information. If convicted on all counts, he could be sentenced to over five years in prison.
