A professor at the University of Iowa has announced plans to run for a seat on the Coralville City Council.

Charles M. “Mike” Knudson made the announcement Thursday.  He says he’s running so he can “support environmentally conscience growth in Coralville and advocate for projects and policies that would enhance the diversity of the community and provide residents with opportunities to participate in artistic and recreational activities in the community and the region.”

Knudson has lived in Coralville for over 20 years and has previously served on the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Board of Adjustment. He currently serves on the Planning and Zoning Commission.

Knudson is a clinical professor in the UI Department of Pathology and medical director of the DeGowin Blood Bank and Donor Center at the UI Hospitals and Clinics. He received a bachelor’s degree in biomedical engineering and an MD/PhD degree from the UI.

Candidates have until Thursday to file nomination papers. Three Coralville council seats and the office of mayor will be contested in the November 2nd election.
