A Shueyville man faces charges that he pulled a gun on a woman in downtown Iowa City early Sunday morning.
The alleged victim flagged down Iowa City Police just before 3am Sunday to report a man had pointed a black pistol at her. The suspect was located near the corner of Linn and Washington Streets, but he allegedly tried to run when an officer activated his lights and siren. The man was eventually caught on the 200 block of Iowa Avenue.
The suspect was identified as 22-year-old Devin Cariens-Hook of Southview Lane NE. He was initially taken to the ground, and when officers picked him up a black 9mm Ruger was found underneath him. Police say the gun had one round chambered and was loaded with an additional 12 rounds. Cariens-Hook allegedly admitted the gun was his and that he ran because he was intoxicated. Police say he provided blood alcohol readings of .128% and .104%.
Cariens-Hook is charged with Possession of a Dangerous Weapon While Intoxicated, Interference with Official Acts with a Dangerous Weapon and Public Intoxication. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over six years in prison.
Cariens-Hook was sentenced to 60 days in jail in 2016 after he and a juvenile accomplice drove a van around Iowa City shooting BB’s at various random victims. One woman was injured.
At one point, the two robbed a woman for gas money on the 600 block of South Gilbert Street by threatening her with the BB gun, which looked like a real gun. Court records show a 1st Degree Robbery charge was pleaded down to 3rd Degree Robbery in a deal with prosecutors. Cariens-Hook was also convicted of Assault Causing Bodily Injury.
