North Liberty Police say a woman hit a bicyclist, then fled the scene before police could arrive.

24-year-old Abigail Hellweg of Beaver Kreek Centre was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 5:45 Friday morning. According to arrest records, Hellweg was driving her 2012 Chevy Cruze eastbound on Lininger Lane just before 12:15pm on August 22nd when she stopped at the stop sign at Alexander Way. Police say she struck a northbound bicycle that was travelling in the crosswalk, causing the bicyclist to go over the handlebars and land in the roadway. Hellweg allegedly left the scene.

The bicyclist suffered a fractured C4 vertebra.

Officers were able to identify the run vehicle by debris that was left at the scene, and Hellweg was identified from various videos taken at the scene. She’s charged with Leaving the Scene of a Serious Injury Accident. If convicted, she faces a maximum of two years in prison.
