Protesters gathered on the Pentacrest and at the Phi Gamma Delta house for a third night, calling for the removal of the fraternity.
The Daily Iowan reports that except for one isolated incident, Thursday night’s protest was peaceful.
About 200 people gathered at the Pentacrest, where a few speeches decried the inaction of University President Barbara Wilson and the alleged drugging and rape of a student in September of last year at the fraternity.
Police once again blocked traffic while the march continued through downtown Iowa City and around residence halls, arriving at the Phi Gamma Delta house at about 8:45pm. The DI reports that the house, which suffered substantial damage Tuesday night, had some of its windows boarded up.
At the behest of protest leaders, the crowd remained peaceful, sitting outside the house and chanting. Protesters left signs behind in front of the FIJI house, with slogans like “I’m ashamed to be a Hawkeye,” and “Arrest those rapists.”
A moment of silence was observed for victims of sexual assault. As they left, one protester threw rocks at the back windows of FIJI but was urged to stop by the crowd.
The protest ended a little after 9:30pm.
