A teenage suspect in an Iowa City stabbing case has entered a not guilty plea.

17-year-old Lazaro Bwayo entered the plea Friday, according to court records.

Iowa City Police say two people were fighting with each other at The Quarters on Highway 6 East just after 9:15pm on June 12th when Bwayo armed himself with a knife and stabbed one of the subjects in the abdomen. The victim required immediate surgery at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics. Police say the victim faced a “substantial risk of death”.

Surveillance video recorded the incident. Bwayo was arrested on August 11th and charged with Willful Injury Causing Serious Injury, Going Armed With Intent and Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 17 years in prison.

Trial is now set for January 11th, with a case management conference scheduled for October 22nd.
Bwayo has no known address, but the Iowa City Community School District web site lists him as a 2021 graduate of City High.
