The Iowa City Community School District will be offering free take-home COVID-19 testing kits for students and employees who show symptoms of the virus.
The Press-Citizen reports that the district is not planning on mass testing or testing of asymptomatic students. The kits would be given to those that present with symptoms in school. School nurses will not administer the tests; they must be done at home by a guardian. The test results must be registered online.
School began this week, with health and safety protocols in place, but per state law no mask mandate. A district lawyer told the board earlier this week that the way the law is written makes it impossible to challenge in court.
So far this week, 35 students have tested positive for COVID-19 and 11 are quarantined.
