A Grimes man who accused a downtown Iowa City bar of taking his ID was arrested when it was found to be a fake.

Police say 19-year-old Reece Boardman called police at around 1:15 am last Friday and accused the staff at Elrays on East Iowa Avenue of keeping his ID. Arriving officers talked to Boardman and reportedly noticed that he had no wrist stamp matching the one used at ElRays. Staff told police that Boardman hadn’t entered the bar. Officers told Boardman to leave, but he insisted that staff took his Ohio ID.

Boardman was asked to check his wallet, and he reportedly pulled out his Iowa under 21 ID from it, trying to hide it from police. Officers attempted to detain Boardman, but he pulled away and allegedly tried running from police. He was caught but resisted requests to put his hands behind his back and reportedly tried to run again.

A probable cause search of Boardman found his Ohio ID, which police say had his picture and real name on it, but the birthdate was made to appear Boardman to be 21 or older. When questioned, Boardman allegedly admitted to drinking several shots and being at other bars.

He was charged with Public Intoxication, Interference with Official Acts, and Possession of a Fictitious ID. If convicted on all counts, Boardman could face up to 14 months in jail.
