Iowa City Police have arrested an alleged accomplice in a credit card theft case.

46-year-old Shannon Schafer of 1st Avenue in Iowa City was booked into the Johnson County Jail just after 8:15 Friday night. Police say Schafer was waiting inside a running vehicle while 41-year-old transient Douglas McCurn stole a credit card from an unlocked car in the Ace Hardware parking lot on North Dodge Street just after 5:15pm on July 31st. McCurn and Schafer then allegedly went inside the store, selected 17 items, and used the credit card to pay for them. The total value of the items was $950.58.

Both incidents were caught on security video. McCurn was booked into the Johnson County Jail Tuesday morning. He and Schafer are each charged with Unauthorized Use of a Credit Card and 3rd Degree Theft. If convicted on both charges, they each face a maximum of four years in prison.

McCurn faces an added charge of Attempted 3rd Degree Burglary of a Motor Vehicle, which carries a maximum one-year jail term.
