The Iowa City Community School District says they won’t enforce Mayor Bruce Teague’s mask mandate, saying that their hands are tied by the State Department of Education.
The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that in an e-mail to families Friday, Superintendent Matt Degner said he applauded the mandate, but the district is, quote, “expected to follow state law and guidance from the Iowa Department of Education.”
The district already is encouraging students, faculty and staff to wear masks, regardless of their vaccination status. Degner also said the District is discussing potential legal paths to protect their community from COVID -19.
The district begins the school year this Monday.
