A transient faces charges that he hit his girlfriend with a bag of cans, causing a minor injury.

Iowa City Police received multiple calls about a fight between a man and a woman in the alley between the 300 block of South Linn and South Gilbert Streets around 10am Tuesday. The male was reportedly throwing cans at the woman before walking away southbound.

Arriving officers found the woman cleaning up cans off the ground. She was bleeding from a cut on the bridge of her nose and told investigators that her boyfriend, 46-year-old Troy Barkalow, had thrown a bag of cans at her face.

Barkalow was found a few blocks away. He admitted to fighting with his girlfriend, but claimed she was injured when the two were struggling over a bag of cans and she yanked it away, causing it to hit her face. Barkalow also reportedly said that she scratched him, but it did not cause an injury.

Barkalow and his girlfriend had lived together between approximately December 2020 and March of this year. They have since stayed at various locations throughout Iowa City.

Barkalow was arrested and charged with Domestic Abuse Assault Causing Injury. If convicted, she faces a maximum of one year in jail.
