A self-proclaimed member of the Iowa Freedom Riders arrested last summer for allegedly vandalizing the Old Capitol now faces charges that he stole a car, crashed it into a tree, and fought with police.

19-year-old Logan Creach of Kirkwood Avenue is accused of stealing a 2015 Jeep Compass from the Domino’s Pizza parking lot on South Gilbert Street and ramming it into a tree in the same lot just after 9pm Tuesday. The vehicle was totaled, with damage estimated at over $10,000.

By the time officers arrived at the scene, Creach was sitting in his father’s vehicle. He allegedly initially refused to get out despite officers’ commands to do so.

Creach eventually left the vehicle. Police say he admitted to taking the Jeep from a woman and crashing it into the tree because someone had threatened to taze him.

Creach was handcuffed and placed into the back of a patrol car, where he was able to move his hands from behind him to his front. Officers removed the restraints so they could re-cuff him, but Creach allegedly tensed up, pulled away and tried to run. During the ensuing struggle he allegedly removed one officer’s vest before being forced back into handcuffs.

Creach is charged with 1st Degree Theft, 1st Degree Criminal Mischief, Assault on Peace Officers, Interference With Official Acts and Escape of a Felon. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of over 26 years in prison.

Creach was arrested on felony criminal mischief charges in August of 2020 when he allegedly spray-painted graffiti on the Old Capitol during a Black Lives Matter protest.  Court records show the charge was dismissed due to an error in not filing it in a timely manner.
