The University of Iowa is the only Big Ten school not requiring masks or vaccines going into the fall semester. And it looks like it’s going to stay that way.

The Daily Iowan reports that in a Monday press conference, new President Barbara Wilson said that the university is monitoring the spread of novel coronavirus on campus, but hopes not to make any changes to the current guidance. She added that she’s been pleased with mask wearing among students during move-in week.

Hundreds of faculty and staff sent a signed a petition to UI administrators asking for mask and vaccine mandates on campus. Short of that, they asked that unvaccinated staff and students be regularly tested for COVID-19. President Wilson reiterated her previously released statement Monday, saying that she is in regular communication with the State Board of Regents and keeping them informed on COVID-19 numbers on campus. Wilson additionally said that the school is monitoring the wastewater of all residence halls weekly, and students will have access to testing.

The DI also reports that the university is planning to begin a campaign with students to help encourage their peers to practice COVID-19 safety. Wilson also said administrators will look at a number of statistics prior to making any changes to protocol.
