An Iowa City man has been arrested after allegedly being caught trying to steal a catalytic converter from a Salvation Army van.

Arrest reports indicated that 54-year-old Leo Neuzil of Brown Street was on the 1100 block of Gilbert Court Friday just after 8 pm.  He is accused of intentionally cutting off the converter.

Neuzil was reportedly caught in the act by a staff member, and was identified through cell phone footage.

Neuzil was questioned the following day and admitted to being on scene at the time of the incident, but allegedly denied damaging the property. He reportedly had multiple tools consistent with catalytic converter theft in his vehicle.

The cost of the damaged converter was estimated to be $2500.

Neuzil was taken into custody and charged with 2nd degree Criminal Mischief, a Class D felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
