A Coralville man allegedly chose the wrong place and time to do cocaine early Sunday morning after Iowa City Police say they found him snorting the substance in the middle of the Ped Mall during the height of bar rush.

Multiple officers from the Iowa City and University of Iowa Police departments were on routine foot patrol downtown just after 12:15 Sunday morning when officers reported seeing 28-year-old Derrick Schafbuch of 10th Street giving another person a white, powdery substance that the person then snorted up her nose. Schafbuch was allegedly found holding a bag containing a substance consistent with cocaine. Police say he also had white residue around his mouth and under his nose. A second bag of suspected cocaine was found on Schafbuch’s person after he was detained.

Schafbuch is charged with Possession of a Controlled Substance. If convicted, he faces a maximum of one year in jail.
