An Iowa City man was reportedly tested at over twice the legal limit to drive when arrested for his third OWI Thursday evening.

53-year-old Brandon Hudson of South Gilbert Street was called in as a reckless driver in the area of Clapp and Jefferson streets, alleging that he was swerving all over the roadway. Police located Hudson near Dubuque Street and Linder Road just after 6:50 pm and initiated a traffic stop.

Hudson reportedly told officers right away that he was drunk and unable to drive. He allegedly smelled strongly of ingested alcohol, had slurred speech and impaired balance. Field testing showed measurable impairment, and his blood-alcohol level tested at .170 percent on a PBT and .159 percent on Datamaster.

Hudson reportedly admitted to drinking 7 beers before driving, and an open container of Busch Light was found in the vehicle.

With previous OWI’s found on Hudson’s records from 2010 and 2014, he was charged with his third offense, a Class D Felony punishable by a prison term of up to five years if convicted.
