Johnson County Public Health is now advising all residents to wear masks indoors, whether or not they’ve been fully vaccinated.

The Daily Iowan reports that the county’s Community Health Manager Sam Jarvis told the Board of Supervisors that as of Wednesday, the county is experiencing moderate transmission, while surrounding counties are either rated substantial or with high transmission. He believes that the trend indicates that Johnson County will eventually experience substantial or high transmission as well.

The CDC has already recommended that fully vaccinated people wear masks in public indoor settings in areas with substantial or high transmission.

Jarvis says County Health is working with the University of Iowa on how to align its recommendations with policies already set for the school by the Board of Regents. Students begin the fall semester August 23rd and have already started to arrive. Many, if not most, are believed to be fully vaccinated.

While Jarvis doesn’t believe the county will see a surge of cases in Johnson County  like was experienced last November, he does expect an increase in the coming weeks.
