Connie Champion, who was believed to be the longest-tenured city councilor in Iowa City history, passed away over the weekend. She was 80 years old.
A 2013 Cedar Rapids Gazette article reflecting on her 16 years on the council described her as “brutally honest from behind the council’s dais. That included with herself, as she was known for occasionally changing her mind on a matter.”
At her last meeting December 17th of that year, she received word that the next day would be proclaimed Connie Champion Day.
Champion was also on the Iowa City school board for nine years before being elected to City Council. Among her proudest accomplishments during her tenure were the extension of First Avenue, using city funds to help the Englert Theatre, expanding and renovating the city’s library, and an about-face vote to change the bar-entry age to 21.
Funeral arrangements are pending.
