South Slope Cooperative Communications is bringing a new fiber-optic network to Oxford.

That’s according to a company news release. South Slope officials say construction on the network will begin next month. The project will replace copper wiring with fiber-optic lines. The company says the upgrade is necessary because of increased internet usage due to streaming services, more people working at home and other causes.

South Slope recent received $5.4 million from the federal government to fund the project. Half of the money is a grant, with the other half coming via a low-interest loan.

The fiber network will be completed within Oxford’s city limits before expanding to surrounding areas. No timetable for completion was included in Friday’s news release.
