An Iowa City man was arrested after being called in as an intoxicated driver and allegedly found with a loaded handgun.
Police say the incident involved 29-year-old Victor Curry of Beach View Drive. On Wednesday around 5:15am, he was called in by his mother as an intoxicated driver after a verbal altercation at her residence. He was stopped near Old Highway 218 at McCollister Boulevard, and officers say Curry had slurred speech, red bloodshot watery eyes, smelled of ingested alcohol, and admitted to drinking.
Curry refused field testing and a PBT but agreed to a Datamaster test that showed his blood-alcohol level at .172 percent.
A subsequent probable cause search of the vehicle revealed a bag of marijuana on the floorboard of the driver’s seat and a loaded Derringer within Curry’s reach. A check of Curry’s driving records reportedly showed his status as suspended.
He was charged with 2nd offense OWI, Possession of a dangerous weapon while intoxicated, and marijuana possession. If convicted on all counts, Curry could be sentenced to up to four years in prison.
