IC man accused of discharging gun during fight earlier this week arrested after road rage incident near City High

The suspect accused of discharging a firearm during a fight on South Van Buren Street earlier this week now faces charges that he rammed another car during a road rage incident earlier this month near City High School.

Iowa City Police say the alleged incident occurred just after 9:30am on July 1st. 32-year-old Christopher Cummings of South Dodge Street is accused of following the alleged victim into the Bates Field Parking lot after a road rage incident on 1st Avenue just north of Court Street. Police say Cummings intentionally rammed the other person’s car with his 2008 Chrysler PT Cruiser, striking the passenger side rear tire with his front bumper. He’s charged with Assault While Displaying a Dangerous Weapon and Reckless Driving. If convicted, he faces a maximum of two years in jail.

Cummings was booked into the Johnson County Jail earlier this week after he allegedly discharged a firearm on the 400 block of South Van Buren Street. Police say Cummings had been arguing with another man just after 8:30 Monday night went he went inside a second story apartment, grabbed a gun, and fired it into the air from the balcony. He was taken into custody and charged with Intimidation with a Dangerous Weapon, Going Armed with Intent, and Reckless Use of a Firearm. If convicted on all counts from the Monday incident, Cummings could be sentenced to over 15 years in prison.
