A University of Iowa student was taken into custody early Monday after allegedly showing impaired balance while driving his moped in the overnight hours.

Police stopped 20-year-old Amari Sewell of East Burlington Street near the intersection of College and Lucas streets at 2 am after he was reportedly observed having difficulty balancing the vehicle at multiple intersections. His registration was also allegedly improperly displayed.

Sewell reportedly had bloodshot watery eyes, slurred speech, and the odor of ingested alcohol. He admitted to drinking, and after performing poorly on field testing, failed a PBT. A subsequent Datamaster test showed his blood alcohol level at .100 percent.

A check of Sewell’s wallet allegedly found a fictitious Indiana driver’s license.

He was taken into custody and faces two serious misdemeanor charges, one each for OWI and possession of a fictitious license.
