A car vs. bicycle accident has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man.
Iowa City Police responded to the accident scene on Riverside Drive outside Kum & Go just before 5:30 Monday night. Investigators determined that 21-year-old Gerardo Mendoza of the Hilltop manufactured housing community was driving his 2004 Pontiac Vibe southbound on Riverside when he struck a bicyclist crossing the road near Benton Street. The bicyclist suffered minor injuries.
Police learned Mendoza’s driver’s license is barred until May of 2025, and that he has no insurance on the vehicle he was driving. Mendoza was arrested and charged with Driving While Barred, an Aggravated Misdemeanor punishable by a maximum of two years in prison.
