Cedar Rapids firefighters battled a blaze in the Wellington Heights area Wednesday morning.

Crews were dispatched to the nearly century-old building, on the 1400 block of 3rd Avenue Southeast, between 7:30 and 7:45 am on reports of a fire. Arriving crews discovered light smoke pushing out of a first floor apartment.

Firefighters evacuated residents using emergency fire escape ladders and ground ladders deployed to balconies and windows of the three-story building.

The apartment where the fire originated suffered major damage, with minor smoke damage throughout the rest of the 12-unit building. The occupants were displaced, but there were no injuries.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
