The new President at the University of Iowa will make more than her predecessor, but her contract is a lot more specific about her duties.

The Cedar Rapids Gazette reports that Barbara Wilson will receive an annual salary of $600,000, compared to former president Bruce Harreld’s $590,000 yearly take. However, she has a newly-written requirement to keep the State Board of Regents “fully informed of significant issues affecting the university.”

She is also to serve as the U of I’s Chief Executive Officer, a designation never specifically outlined in Harreld’s contract.

Another new section specifically designates all of Wilson’s correspondence, papers, documents, and the like while president become “exclusive property of the University.”

Harreld left the university immediately upon graduation on May 16th  after announcing his early departure in October 2020. The Gazette reports Harreld’s departure was at the request of Board of Regents President Mike Richards, and negated Harreld’s deferred compensation. Harreld maintained in a parting statement that he always intended to donate that compensation back to the university.  Neither Harreld, the University of Iowa nor the Board of Regents has commented on why Harreld decided to retire earlier than planned.

Wilson’s deferred compensation will be $400,000 yearly, for a total of $2 million by the year 2026.

Her contract also includes more specific information about what would constitute a reason to terminate the agreement, including examples of termination with or without cause.
