Trial begins Tuesday for IC sexual assault suspect

Trial is finally scheduled to get underway Tuesday for an Iowa City sexual assault suspect arrested three years ago.

34-year-old Carlos Hivento of 15th Street Southeast in Cedar Rapids faces four counts of third degree sexual abuse, and two counts of invasion of privacy.

Arrest reports indicate that in the early morning hours of November 18th, 2018, Hivento sexually assaulted a 19-year-old woman in an apartment stairwell next to the Fieldhouse Bar and later at the Iowa House Hotel at the Iowa Memorial Union.

Police say the victim was in an incapacitated state and unable to give consent.

Hivento is also alleged to have used his cellphone to take sexually graphic videos of himself and the woman engaged in sex acts without the victim knowing she was being recorded.

Hivento’s trial has been scheduled and delayed a number of of times. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 44 years in prison.
