A 19-year-old transient who was arrested Monday afternoon for allegedly being in possession of a vehicle stolen out of Minnesota was reportedly found Tuesday night driving another stolen car.
On Monday, police came in contact with Alec Woods in the 3600 block of Highway 1 in a 2001 Chevy Impala with Minnesota plates. A check of the registration showed that the vehicle was reported stolen. Woods allegedly told officers that a friend named “Brendan” let him borrow the vehicle, and he admitted to driving it to Iowa.
Police determined that Woods had no authority to possess the vehicle, and charged him with 2nd degree Theft.
Just before midnight Tuesday, a deputy sheriff reportedly saw Woods driving around Fast Break on Naples Avenue, which was closed at the time. An Iowa City police officer had taken a stolen vehicle report on a 2004 Chevy Cavalier earlier in the evening matching the vehicle Woods was in possession of.
Under Miranda, Woods allegedly told the deputy that he had stolen the vehicle.
Woods was jailed and charged with his second vehicle theft in as many days, and now faces prison time of up to ten years if convicted on both charges.
