Iowa City Police conducted more tobacco compliance checks Saturday night.
Working with plainclothes officers, underage persons entered 20 businesses and attempted to illegally purchase tobacco products. Online records show 18 of the businesses refused to sell to the underage buyers. Only Sauce on the Ped Mall and Up In Smoke on North Linn Street failed the compliance check.
The ICPD conducted similar tobacco compliance checks last weekend, with Liquor Downtown on South Gilbert Street being the only one of 30 businesses checked to fail.
An employee convicted of selling tobacco products to a minor is guilty of a simple misdemeanor, punishable with a $100 fine. Additionally, the violation may result in civil penalties against the tobacco license.
