A self-proclaimed “Good Samaritan” allowed a transient from the Quad Cities that she just met to sleep at her Iowa City apartment overnight…and woke up to find her car and several possessions missing, along with the transient.

Iowa City Police say a woman let 42-year-old Michelle Brashear stay at her North Linn Street residence on the night of April 20th because Brashear said she had no way to get back home to Davenport. The two had met earlier that day. The woman went to sleep at 3am the next morning, and woke up at noon to find Brashear, her 2004 Hyundai Santa Fe and several other items missing from her apartment.

The stolen car was located by Rock Island Police five days later. The occupants said they were given the car by a “Michelle Taylor”, which is Brashear’s maiden name. Investigators checked Brashear’s social media accounts to confirm her identity.

Brashear was also allegedly found in possession of a stolen vehicle outside the Coralville Walmart just after 6:45pm on May 4th.  She was booked into the Johnson County Jail just before 10:15 Saturday morning and charged with two counts of 2nd Degree Theft and one count each of 3rd Degree Burglary, Driving While Revoked and Interference with Official Acts. If convicted on all charges, she faces a maximum of over 16 years in prison.
