In 1964, The New York Times coined the phrase “Skateboarding is not a crime”…an assertion disputed by Iowa City Police after they arrested an argumentative skateboarder early Thursday morning.

According to arrest records, an officer pulled up behind 21-year-old Joseph Quinn of South Dubuque Street just before 2:30am near the corner of Gilbert and College Streets. Quinn had been skateboarding on the street when the officer asked him to move to the sidewalk. Quinn allegedly ignored the command and continued skating down Gilbert Street.

The officer turned around to confront Quinn, who allegedly became confrontational when the officer again told him to ride on the sidewalk.  Quinn allegedly claimed he didn’t have to listen to the officer and could ride on the street.

Police say Quinn refused multiple requests to produce identification. He was also allegedly uncooperative and rude with multiple officers.

Quinn was arrested and charged with Interference with Official Acts. If convicted, he faces a maximum of 30 days in jail.

Trial is set for September 14th.
