A Linn County Sheriff’s deputy remains in stable condition at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics after being shot during an attempted robbery over the weekend.
Prosecutors say a Chicago man robbed two Coggon gas station employees at gunpoint and confined them in a cooler before firing ten times at Linn County Deputy William Halverson, who responded to the crime.
A criminal complaint released Tuesday says Halverson was wearing a protective vest but was shot by Stanley Donahue in the left hip and leg while responding to the robbery Sunday night at the Casey’s General Store in Coggon. Donahue then allegedly stole Halverson’s service weapon and fled. Halverson remained hospitalized in stable condition Tuesday at the UIHC. Halverson has worked for the county for seven years.
Donahue was arrested after he was spotted in the area Monday afternoon by a KCRG TV-9 news crew. He’s charged with attempted murder, first-degree robbery, willful injury, disarming a peace officer and possession of a firearm as a felon. Donahue has a lengthy criminal history including previous charges of unlawful vehicular invasion, aggravated vehicular hijacking with a weapon, aggravated battery and aggravated robbery.
