The hunt for the alleged shooter of a Linn County Sheriff’s Deputy came to a peaceful end Monday afternoon after a TV news crew spotted the man walking in the area and notified authorities.

The incident occurred at 10:30 pm Sunday at the Casey’s General Store on Highway 13. The deputy was shot several times inside the store.

The suspect was identified as 36-year-old Stanley Donahue of Chicago. He eluded authorities Sunday night after the van he fled the scene in crashed, and he took off on foot.

A description of Donahue was published; a KCRG TV crew in the area spotted a man matching the description walking nearby at 12:40 Monday afternoon and alerted authorities. They say Donahue surrendered peacefully without incident.

Donahue, who the Cedar Rapids Gazette reports had spent time in prison for a criminal history that includes cases for drug possession, unlawful vehicular invasion, aggravated vehicular hijacking with a weapon, aggravated battery and aggravated robbery, faces several charges. They include attempted murder, first-degree robbery, willful injury, disarming a peace officer and possession of a firearm as a felon. He remains at the Linn County Jail.

The deputy was airlifted to the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, where he’s being treated for serious injuries. His condition was reported to be stable.
