A Cedar Rapids apartment occupant likely had their life saved by a smoke detector after allegedly falling asleep while cooking.

A release from the city’s Fire Department says that they were called to an apartment on the 800 block of Bridgit Lane Southeast just before 12:30 am Monday. Arriving crews found light smoke coming from the apartment building and quickly found a small fire in the kitchen of one of the units. The occupant had evacuated before firefighters arrived, and the blaze was quickly extinguished.

The occupant was woken up by the unit’s smoke detector after they fell asleep while cooking.

The Fire Department says the incident is a prime example of making sure that residences have working smoke detectors. They believe the detector more than likely saved the occupant’s life.

No injuries were reported, and the incident is under investigation.
