Allegedly fleeing a North Liberty traffic stop on foot has led to a Cedar Rapids woman’s arrest.
The Johnson County Sheriff’s Office says a reserve deputy stopped to help a disabled vehicle pulled over near the southbound Penn Street exit on Interstate 380 just after 2:15 Saturday morning. The driver and passenger saw the officer and fled into the nearby woods.
The deputy found the two women, who claimed a group of men had run off. Another officer arrived and said he overheard the two clearly intoxicated women trying to explain their story to other investigators. Both women allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication. The deputies say they did not believe the women.
The driver, 31-year-old Dasha Bays of 37th Avenue SW, explained that she had been driving from Cedar Falls to Cedar Rapids, even though the car was found in an area nowhere between the two cities. Bays also allegedly claimed she pulled over so her pregnant friend could urinate on the side of the road, but when she did she realized she didn’t know where she was.
Bays allegedly performed poorly on field sobriety tests, and registered blood alcohol levels of .158% and .143%. Her license came back as “not valid”.
Bays was arrested and charged with Operating While Intoxicated and No Valid Driver’s License.
