An Iowa City man wanted on a domestic assault incident from earlier this year was arrested after being found with marijuana and two machete-style knives.
Police made contact with 32-year-old Bryan Hinds of Oxen Lane near the corner of Wade Street and Wayne Avenue shortly after midnight Wednesday, as his vehicle was parked in a handicapped place without the proper placard, and because he had an active warrant for his arrest. The vehicle allegedly smelled of marijuana, and Hinds reportedly admitted there was marijuana in the vehicle.
A subsequent probable cause search turned up a small quantity of the drug, as well as two marijuana grinders, a pipe with residue, and a blunt. Hinds also allegedly had two large machete-style knives concealed on either side of the driver seat. As a convicted domestic violence offender, he is not permitted to carry weapons or get a permit to do so.
Hinds was wanted on a 2nd offense domestic assault charge from February 17th, when he was at a Broadway Street apartment to retrieve items. He allegedly became enraged, backhanded a woman and pushed her down in a tub. The woman reportedly suffered a broken nose, scratches on her face, and abrasions on her back as a result. A witness on a video chat call with the woman stated that they saw the victim getting backhanded and heard the rest of the assault.
Hinds was taken into custody and has been charged with Domestic Assault for the February incident, and charges of 3rd or subsequent Controlled Substance possession, possession of drug paraphernalia, and carrying knives with blades over 8 inches long. If convicted on all counts, Hinds could be sentenced to over six years in prison.
