Coralville firefighters battle blaze on 1st Avenue

Firefighters battled a blaze at a Coralville apartment building Wednesday night.

According to a news release from the Coralville Fire Department, crews responded to an apartment fire at 308 1st Avenue at approximately 6:30 pm. Arriving firefighters found flames and heavy smoke coming from the roof. The fire was extinguished about 30 minutes, and damage was contained to the roof and one apartment unit.

Firefighters remained on the scene until about 9:30 pm. Most of the occupants of the complex were home at the time of the fire and got out safely under their own power after a Coralville Police officer activated the fire alarm.

The cause of the fire was ruled to be accidental, but is still under investigation.

Damage is estimated at around $100,000.

The Coralville Fire Department was joined by firefighters from Iowa City, North Liberty, and Tiffin.
