An Iowa City man who accidentally discharged a firearm within city limits last year has been arrested again after he allegedly drove intoxicated while armed.

Iowa City Police were called to the intersection of Bowery and Governor Streets just after 4:15 Friday morning for a male passed out behind the wheel of a white Jeep with its engine running. Arriving officers knocked on the window, at which time the driver allegedly took his foot off the brake, causing the car to move forward. The driver, later identified as 37-year-old Russell Taylor, then pulled over and parked on the side of the street. Taylor allegedly showed multiple signs of intoxication, and his blood alcohol content was measured as .130%.

Taylor’s license is revoked until November for refusing testing for Operating While Intoxicated last year. When officers reached for Taylor’s wallet, they found a firearm on the front passenger seat.

Taylor is charged with OWI 2nd Offense, Driving While Revoked and Possession of a Firearm While Intoxicated. If convicted on all charges, he faces a maximum of four years in prison.

Taylor was fined $105 last year for discharging a firearm within city limits after accidentally shooting another man in the leg on Wayne Avenue.
