Using what police described as threatening, racially-charged and homophobic language at a convenience store has led to the arrest of an Iowa City man.

Iowa City Police were called to the L&M Mighty Shop on East Burlington Street just after 10pm last Friday for an intoxicated male harassing customers and refusing to leave. Arriving officers say 35-year-old Darius Stewart of Friendship Street was inside the store showing signs of intoxication, including poor decision-making skills. Police described Stewart as “verbally abusive, using threatening, racially-charged and homophobic language.” He refused breath testing and told officers multiple times, “I will kill you” and “I will beat your ass.”

Stewart was arrested and charged with Public Intoxication. He pleaded guilty Tuesday and was fined $105.
