The State Board of Regents Academic Affairs Committee has approved two departmental name changes at the University of Iowa during their meeting Wednesday.

The Daily Iowan reports that the first name change involves the Department of Rehabilitation and Counselor Education. They will now be known as the Department of Counselor Education in the College of Education.

The name change was recommended due to a new accreditation process, and makes the department all-encompassing with the removal of “rehabilitation” from the name.

The other change involves moving the division of cardiothoracic surgery at the Carver College of Medicine to its own free-standing department. The DI reports that the division of cardiothoracic surgery was granted standalone status in 2005 but reentered the Department of Surgery in 2018 due to new leadership. The division is going back to standalone to better recruit prominent thoracic and cardiac surgeons.

The regents will consider the recommended changes during its August meeting.
