Earlier this year, the City of Iowa City announced that their recycling centers were no longer accepting plastic take-out food containers, and they’re now seeking community input to learn what preferences residents have for different types of food recycling materials.

Take-out plastics were acceptable in the past, since it was such a small percentage of the total recycled plastics, but with the proliferation of take-out food during the coronavirus pandemic, recycling partners are now rejecting the containers, such as the clamshell or single-use plastics.

The city’s website has a survey, open to all Johnson County residents, that officials will use to take steps to reduce single-use plastic to-go food packaging.

A link to the survey is available under this story on our website and social media platforms.
